First off, not all atheists know or care about science - even if most do. Secondly, there are many Christians who do, and who agree 100% with evolution. Atheists have no god, not even evolution or indeed science.
Besides, even if evolution were proven incorrect, that would not automatically prove the existence of any deity - so we'd still be atheist.

I think Evolution has simply become a very hot topic in religion discussions today. It is certainly very important for the study of biology, but it is by no means crucial to Atheism.
Atheists do not revere any being, so you cannot say they have a god. The point is that they try not to "revere" but to *reason*. Atheists may view evolution as an important theory, and reverence has nothing to do with it.

evolution is the cornerstone of biology because it is the theory which explains much of what we see in the biological world. trying to teach biology without evolution would be like trying to teach physics without gravity.
people question evolution all the time, that's why it's a theory, it's constantly being tested, revised and refined. the scope of evolutionary theory goes far beyond your understanding of natural selection, there are always areas which are being debated and refined, it's a constantly expanding field, if the basis wasn't solid it would have been uncovered a long time ago.
