When I turn adblocking off, the sites are loaded faster and winamp doesnt stop. It looks like outpost takes a lot CPU if the adblocking list is too large. Marcel Q,
Could you please identify which versions of Outpost and Windows you are using and your PC's specification. If you are running Windows 2000/XP, have you used Task Manager to confirm Outpost's CPU usage?
Also please specify if you are running other programs that require Internet access, e.g. P2P applications.
I've been able to confirm this and have raised a ticket with Agnitum - I'd suggest you also report this as a bug (1) and consider other measures to filter ads in the meantime (Proxomitron (www.proxomitron.info) is the most powerful filter available, but you may find AdMuncher (http://www.admuncher.com/) easier to use - or the AdBlock extension if you use Firefox).
If it was an Outpost issue then the outpost process should be consuming available CPU rather than the system process - this suggests to me that something else is having problems with the ad blocking.
Of course, it is difficult to comment on "reasonable" utilisation figures without knowing the PC specification which is why I keep on asking about it.
I'd suggest (after posting your PC specs) checking the Network Activity section in the Outpost main window to ensure that no other applications are accessing the Internet. Any other processes should be investigated (a Google search being a good start). Giving your system a check with AdAware or Spybot Search and Destroy would be a good idea if you have not already done so.
Marcel Q,
Could you please identify which versions of Outpost and Windows you are using and your PC's specification. If you are using the AGNIS list, have you tried the Lite version? (included in the zip file).
I´m using windows xp prof SP1 and outpost 2.1.303.4009(314). I edited my post a few mins after I sent it. So you probably didn´t get those onformation.
yes, I tried it with the lite version. It´s the same problem. The crirical mark seems to be oversteped so or so.
yep, I looked for the CPU eating task and it´s the "system" task. Its CPU usage increases up to 60% every time a site with much images is loaded. If I disable the adblocker plugin, "system" task has constant CPU of zero percent when I load new image sites.
This problem happens f.e. if I´m using the google image search. Every time I click on "show next results", the application winamp (also other audio applications) breaks a few times. I think, the whole system slows down for a few seconds, and the only thing why it was the winamp app that catches my attention are the breaks in the music.
I use a larger filter list, updated with the agnis file. If i´m using "standard" outpost list, there are no breaks. It happens both, Internet Explorer and Mozilla. I am not using other software requiring permament Internet access (no p2p, download manager,....) I´m using windows xp prof SP1 and outpost 2.1.303.4009(314).
