Dream Deferred
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore
And then run?
Does it stink like a rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over
Like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

It means that if you hope desperately for something but must wait for it, there are different outcomes: atrophying of the hope, the hoper becoming neurotic, deep burial of the hope and covering it over with niceness, or maybe the hope will just weigh the hoper down. Or possibly the hope (dream) will come out in sudden violent form--as the couplet at the end implies.
