I downloaded Outpost Firewall (free version) today as I was avised to do so by friends after my Norton IS license expired. However I am having serious problems with it.
Here are my specs as asked for in the sticky:
1. Windows XP Pro SP2
2. v 1.0.1817.1645 (it does say there is a more recent version when running- but I can't connect to get it)
3. Filtnt.sys v1.0.242
4. Basically my problem is this - if Outpost is running, my internet connection doesn't work. At all. No application, even if given full access, can connect to the internet - not even Outpost itself! Outlook cannot access my emails (although activity for outlook is displayed in 'allowed'), Opera cannot view web sites, and Trillian cannot connect to any IM services. After reading the support pages, I can say that nothing is being listed in the 'blocked' category.
If I set Outpost to 'Disable Mode' the problem persists. If I 'Exit' Outpost, the problem persists. If I 'Exit and Shutdown' Outpost, then my internet access is restored.
Can anyone help? Am I missing something obvious?

Outpost can be a bit sensitive, ive heard that sometimes a normal uninstall of a previous firewall can still leave parts of that firewall on the system and this can cause problems with other firewalls like outpost.
Youd have to search these forums or the net for complete instructions on how to totally uninstall your nortons security suite to make sure that isnt the problem.
Then try running outpost in rules wizard mode and see if it works.
Also, what isp are you using to connect to the net? AOL is a bit tricky with outpost but most others seem ok.
I am only a basic user but i am sure others will have more input for you.
Please make a backup of your registry before trying this:
Start/Run/Services.msc/DHCPClient/Run
If that doesn't work:
Start/Run/Regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/DHCP Look for a key called Depondon Service. Double click that and delete the last entry if it is something starting with SYM.
Norton has been known to leave a protection device on the network when it is uninstalled. It has helped others and hopefully it will help you.
Welcome to the forums Mahoobley,
While Outpost Free has its good points, it is dated and has a few annoying bugs. One of those may be the cause of your problem - if all your connections are being blocked with the reason "Learning Mode" then this is a bug with Outpost Free, the best workaround is to switch to Block Most policy (switching back to Rules Wizard once online).
Another bug with the free version is that it loses its configuration if it crashes for any reason - I would advise keeping regular backups of the configuration.cfg file to allow for an easy recovery from this situation.
Thanks for your help guys - followed the advice, everything in the registry checked out ok, and so I can't get Outpost to work.
Going from the comments about Outpost Free being a little incomplete, I think I'll have to look elsewhere. Thanks again.
