What are the top 5 astrology web sites and how many page views per month do each of them receive?

  • According to a September 2000 Nielsen//NetRatings study, the top 10 spirituality and religion sites are 1. astrology.com 2. astronet.women.com 3. 800predict.com 4. gospelcom.net 5. crosswalk.com 6. astrocenter.com 7. beliefnet.com 8. lds.org 9. ibelieve.com 10. astrology.yahoo.com http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2645689,00.html http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2645689-2,00.html While not all of these are explicitly "astrology" websites, it does give a good indication of the top five astrology sites online. The top five astrology-centered websites would then be (based on above data from Nielsen//NetRatings study) 1. astrology.com 2. astronet.women.com 3. 800predict.com 4. astrocenter.com 5. astrology.yahoo.com Unfortunately the study does not also state the page views per month they received. However, a querying of several astrology websites give the following page views per month (note, these numbers are not independently verified, but are stated by the websites themselves): AstroAdvice 7 million monthly page views http://www.astroadvice.com/ad/default.asp AstrologyZone 8 million monthly page views http://shop.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?isbn=1401403247 Astrology Unlimited 6 million monthly page views http://www.astrologyunlimited.com/profile.htm Astrology.com 2.5 million monthly page views http://www.astrology.com/about/Benchmark.html or 5 million monthly page views http://www.astrology.com/about/background.html ArtsCharts 370,000 monthly page views http://artcharts.com/astrology/faqs_about.html These statistics are difficult to find and require an honesty of the site themselves to determine page views because web-metering and usage services are not measuring astrology sites and publicly publishing their results. At least that was the case in 1998 as written in "When The Astrology Zone Aligns With The Internet". It states that "neither of the leading Web-metering services, Media Metrix or Relevant Knowledge, has comparative figures on astrology sites." http://www.astrologynow.com/news/nyt981005.htm More detailed information may be attained from NetRatings (or other statistical services such as Media Metrix), but that would require a subscription to their statistical database. Visit their website for more information on establishing such a relationship and making sure they can provide the data you are seeking, http://www.netratings.com Additional information: Astrology.com Wins Biggest Audience http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2645689-2,00.html Stars, Religion Top Sites For Surfers http://news.com.com/2100-1023-277486.html?legacy=cnet Astrology and Religion Web Sites Draw Surfers http://www.hindustantimes.com/neweconomy/internet0101b.shtml Where Else Fans Surfed On Bowl Day http://www.medialifemagazine.com/news2002/feb02/feb11/1_mon/news4monday.html Search terms used: astrology "page views" ://www.google.com/search?q=astrology+%22page+views%22 nielsen netratings astrology ://www.google.com/search?q=nielsen+netratings+astrology

  • If page views do not determine the size of a website, I'd like to know what factors are used to make that determination. For instance, astrology.com is rated at the #1 astrology web site, yet there are a number of sites with more reported page views.

  • Most statistical studies look at unique visitors when determining which sites are 'on top' rather than page-views. The Nielsen/NetRatings study is based on a "unique audience", where astrology.com had 3.23 million, astronet.women.com had 1.01 million and 800predict.com had 0.52 million. http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2645689,00.html MarketingTerms provides a description of these types of terms and define "page view" as: "Request to load a single HTML page. Page views are only important to the degree they play a part in a site's revenue model. If a site earns much of its revenue from advertising, then page views are important because of their contribution to ad inventory. If a site only earns revenue on sales, then page views are not a key statistic. Page views without corresponding sales may even be viewed as an expense." http://www.marketingterms.com/dictionary/page_view/ and define "unique visitors" as: "Individuals who have visited a Web site (or network) at least once in a fixed time frame, typically a 30 day period. Most measurements of unique visitors are estimates. Sites often calculate unique visitors based on the IP address information found in the log files, and sometimes through cookies. However, many factors may skew the results. Traffic rating companies typically calculate unique visitors by monitoring actual usage of a group of volunteers, then applying the results to to the Internet population. Results fluctuate considerably for small sites due to their small sample sizes." http://www.marketingterms.com/dictionary/unique_visitors/
