Can't RSS Feed from Main Page
Published by: rose 2009-01-07

  • Hi, guys,

I have the latest version of VB running on my site, SITEA (if you will). When I first installed VB, I could easily add posts made to SITEA (which runs on Wordpress) as new threads in my forum via the RSS feed system. Then one day it just stopped; I think this was around two months ago, and I have no idea if it corresponds to an update or not, because the whole thing is automated, I didn't notice when it stopped until nearly 2 months later.

(NOTE: I have VB on another site using the latest version (patch 3.7.2), and I'm RSS feeding the latest posts from that site's main page to its forum just fine.)

To test out if the rss feed system was broken on SITEA's forum, I tried adding feeds from other sites, and they work just fine. It's just this one feed that isn't working. It keeps giving me an "Unable to open URL or no data returned" error message.

As further info, I have feeds from SITEA on other sites, and again, no problems, the feeds go through just fine. But for some reason, I just can't get RSS feed to show up in the forum.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

  • Okay then. I would hoping you'd provide a real URL to where you are having this problem ("Unable to open URL or no data returned") but I guess not.

The bottom line is that I cannot duplicate this problem with the default vB code. The RSS feed works fine.

What "real URL" are you talking about? That error message is the result of me trying to preview the RSS feed from heroestheseries.com/feed/. As mentioned in the first post and elsewhere, I'm trying to create new threads in the heroestheseries.com forum using the latest posts from the front page, using vb's RSS feed manager. Everything was working just fine until 2 months ago. I'm still able to feed the heroestheseries.com RSS to other sites, just not to the forum on heroestheseries.com, and I can't figure it out.

That's the problem, the feed from heroestheseries.com works everywhere else EXCEPT on the vb running on the domain. I recognize it's a unique one, as I've tried to find answers all across the net, and came here as a last resort, hoping the guys who created the software would have some answers.

  • That feed works fine on my unmodified 3.7.2 test forum. Have you installed any add-ons?

Yeah, that was kind of the point of my original post. The feed works just fine everywhere else BUT the forum on the same domain. The only add-on I have is Shout Box, and I've uninstalled it (I wasn't using it anyway). Still just "Unable to open URL or no data returned" when I tried to preview the feed.

  • This feed does work. Therefore the issue is on your end somewhere. It could be from one of your ad-ons or it could be a server issue.

To troubleshoot this, first reupload all the original vB non-image files (except install.php). Make sure you upload these in ASCII format and overwrite the ones on the server. Also be sure to upload the admincp files to whichever directory you have set in your config.php file. Then run 'Suspect File Versions' in Diagnostics to make sure you have all the original files for your version and that none show 'File does not contain expected contents':

Admin CP -> Maintenance -> Diagnostics -> Suspect File Versions

[Note: In some cases you may also need to remove any of the listed .xml files in the includes/xml directory.]

    Next, disable all plugins.

Note: To temporarily disable the plugin system, edit config.php and add this line right under
    define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);

Then if you still have this problem, that indicates there is something unique about your server setup that is causing this.

  • It sounds like the problem is with that specific feed. Try previewing the feed:

Admin CP -> RSS Feeds -> RSS Feed Manager -> [Edit]

There is a preview button on the edit page. Does the preview show any content? Also try loading the feed's URL directly in your browser. If the feed works but the preview doesn't then the feed might be blocking the request from your server. Many feeds have what are basically spam filters that block some requests.

Hi, Jake, thanks for the response. No, previewing the feed within VB yields no results. When previewing, it gives me the "Unable to open URL or no data returned" response.

And when I type in the feed address, it works just fine:

    http://www.heroestheseries.com/feed/

    Thanks.

  • And that link is?

Um, HeroesTheSeries.com. As mentioned above. I made a very detail description of my problem in the first post. Please read that.

  • I don't now what you mean by 'the forum on the same domain'. Please explain.

The forum where I want to create new threads from the RSS feed is on the same domain as the feed.
