The Pros And Cons Of Acting College
Published by: webmaster 2008-11-20

Firstly let me just say go easy on me for that rather predictable title but I just couldn't resist getting it in! OK, I thought I'd write a little about the importance of going to an acting college and whether it really does make a difference to your acting career.

The role of an acting college is to prepare you to undertake a variety of roles and projects in a very competitive industry. An acting college will not just teach you how to act though as you will also benefit from many additional skills such as higher self confidence and improved interaction al skills within your environment. It will also offer graduate programs, undergraduate programs, associate degrees and certificate courses to aspiring actors.

What's Involved In Going To Acting College?

Typically the whole process will start with you submitting an application to your chosen acting college and then if the acting college is interested then you will be asked to attend an audition. Every acting college has it's own criteria for auditioning candidates but as a guide you should expect to be asked to demonstrate your acting skills by way of preparing some pieces of work to read/ perform. You may be asked to prepare a modern piece, a classical or period piece and additionally you may be asked to sing a song and also take part in some interactive role play.

Though this auditioning process may seem a little daunting, providing that you prepare your pieces and learn them properly, you will be giving yourself the best possible chance to prove yourself and your acting abilities.

I Don't Need To Go To Acting College, I'm Good Enough Already!

You know what? That may very well be the case but don't just take your own word for it. There are many skills that you can learn from acting training that you may simply never experience should you not attend a course. Further to this, if you are going to arm yourself for a career in acting then you will want to give yourself an unfair advantage so remember this! Some of the most important contacts you will make will be made by attending an acting course, and particularly in your earlier years as an actor.

In your career as an actor, many of the people you start off with at the bottom will often turn out to be the big players in later years which may include future casting directors, producers etc. You can see where I'm going here! So in a nutshell, make use of any contact that you can that may be beneficial to your later on in your acting career. Networking plays a tremendous part in show business and can tell you that many casting decisions are made not just purely from an actors talent. Having a 'foot' in the door really does help but naturally at the end of the day you must be able to deliver the goods.

Are There Any Age Restrictions?

One of the beautiful things about acting is that the craft is simply not restricted by your age. Casting directors will always need to cast a particular character whether it be a baby, a teenager, a middle aged person or an elderly pensioner. So in that respect, age just simply doesn't matter as a casting director will cast accordingly. Of course, if a casting director really wants you and but are younger than the part being cast then there is always the possibility that they will 'age' you accordingly with makeup.

If you really want to form a career in acting then opting to enrol in an performers course is a great move and one that will be very beneficial to you. Your first point of call is to start contacting local acting colleges and asking to be sent a prospectus and application form.
