Advance Your Career by Attending Nursing Conferences

Published by: wktd 2008-11-20

Due to the rapid changes in care and treatment, the medical field licensing boards require nurses and other healthcare professionals to continue to educate themselves and develop their skills. There are many options available to accomplish this task. College classes, continuing education trainings, in-house training, and seminars are some examples. Nursing conferences are another good source of both continuing education hours and skills training opportunities.

Nursing conferences offer many training opportunities in one location. They offer a chance to get several necessary content areas covered in a few days. The presenters and trainers are usually selected for their expertise in a particular area and are invaluable educational resources. Presentations and classes may be offered on new technologies and equipment available in the nursing field. Training is often available on new techniques and assessment strategies. These present opportunities to learn new, and important, facets of the nursing field that can be taken back to the workplace and shared. The educational piece alone makes nursing conferences an important part of any career. The information gained, and shared, can help secure a position as an important resource within the work place.

Developing new skills by taking classes at the conferences and attending presentations also secures your place at work. When a new technology, or piece of equipment, is presented attend the training session for it. Then, when your company purchases the piece of equipment you will be in a position to be a lead person, or trainer, on that particular unit. When making a move to a new position these additional skills will be an important selling point and could lead to higher pay.

Attending conferences shows your employer that you are committed to your field. By attending you will develop new techniques and skills that will benefit the hospital or clinic and, ultimately, the patients. New developments in patient care are being developed daily. New, advanced procedures are coming out regularly. The equipment needed for these procedures, as well as many already in place, are being developed and refined constantly. With all of this change, it is vitally important to continue to learn and develop as a nurse. Conferences offer this opportunity. These new found skills could lead to promotions or other moves leading to increased pay.

Nursing conferences are also a great place for networking. Networking is important in any career. The opportunity to talk, and share ideas, with colleagues is essential for continuing growth. This is also a chance to see what developments are taking place in other areas of the nursing field. At the same time, information can be shared about salaries, benefits, and possible openings in other areas. For someone looking to make a move up the ladder this can be an essential tool. Whether looking to move up in the current position or move to another location, this networking can provide the much needed information to do so.

Networking is also important for developing resources. When confronted with a problem outside a particular scope of practice, those connections may pay off. If you meet a nurse or doctor at the conference who specializes in a particular area make the connection. Later, if you run into a problem in that specialty area, you can call upon that connection to help you solve the problem. Your supervisors will be impressed with your problem solving ability. Always give credit to these resources, to ensure that they will continue to help out.

And, finally, nursing conferences offer an opportunity to sharpen your patient care skills. The ultimate goal of any training, class, or course is to improve, or enhance, patient care. Patient care is what nursing is all about. Many conferences offer classes on working with doctors and other nurses to enhance patient care. Classes on assessment and management skills are also available. Hands-on training to develop, and practice, skills are key components, as well. These educational opportunities are the backbone of what conferences are all about. The skills and techniques learned in the trainings will directly impact your patient care. This will make you a better nurse and caregiver.

The simple act of attending conferences shows an employer that you are committed to your career. The willingness to continue to learn and develop new skills is an important asset to any nurse. Technology and equipment change often. Learning how to change with it and incorporate it into practice is essential. As medical procedures change, and new ones are developed, the nurse with the most education will be positioned to take the step and move into those needed positions.
