The Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) has been founded by Alcatel, Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens with the objective of formulating visions on future research directions in the wireless field among industry and academia.

Its other purpose will be to generate, identify, and promote research areas and technical trends for mobile and wireless system technologies.

The WWRF is a further development of work started in May of this year by the Wireless Strategic Initiative (WSI), started by Alcatel, Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens as a project under the Information Society Technologies programme of the European Union.

The WSI project organized an invited think tank of international experts to develop first concepts for the wireless field, the results of which will be released this month.

The WWRF is intended to closely co-operate with the UMTS Forum, ETSI, 3GPP, IETF, ITU, and other relevant bodies regarding commercial and standardization issues derived from the research work.

The forum is open to all interested parties, and members are expected to contribute papers and ideas. In 2001, the forum will organize three working sessions and a workshop.
